Las Vegas, yes, another city of lights.
I am not a big fan of Las Vegas and I was here on business so I had to suck it up.
I was here two weeks after the fatal mass shooting. To make matters worse the function I needed to attend was at the Mandalay Bay Hotel… It would add a different dimension to the trip at least!
I don’t need the entertainment that Vegas offers. If I want a night out with “the lads” I am more inclined to head to the local pub or head up in to the hills to a remote cabin somewhere. The stimulation in Vegas is a lot like being on a military firing range for a combined arms exercise.
Most of the time I found myself tied up in meetings. However, the one aspect that I did enjoy was the culinary experience.
While a little overpriced, the selection and quality of food offerings in Las Vegas is impressive. On two evenings I was thrilled by interesting food with unique and exciting flavours. Whether Japanese, Irish, Italian or Fusion, your taste buds will be livened by the choice of food in Vegas.
I was actually there for some meetings with Barrett Jackson and frankly touring the Mandalay Bay for a Barrett Jackson show is something else. The atmosphere is electric. The scale of the auction is “gihugic” and everyone is there to get the latest deal on some prized car. It was a sight to behold and for sure, Barrett Jackson know their business. Every aspect of it was beyond professional.
On the same day as the auction I had the opportunity to eat at the Mandalay Bay and meet the waitress who was serving us.
Las Vegas – When A Community Comes Together
I asked her about the shootings and her experience. What I discovered was a side to Vegas that I did not know existed.
She told me that the day after the shootings volunteers were already building a brand new park in memory of the victims of the tragic event. By the end of the first day, 58 trees, one for each life lost had been planted. The proponents behind the park concept were overwhelmed with the generosity of local businesses and residents. One of whom I believe donated $1 million in cash and materials.
Additionally somebody started a GoFundMe page to assist the victims. The goals was to raise $1MM, well that happened quickly on the first day, in fact several goals were eclipsed and today the fund is north of $11 million and heading to $15 million. You can donate here.
Perhaps Las Vegas has many redeeming qualities, none of which I knew about before I talked to the waitress at the Mandalay Bay hotel. This entry was posted in Travel
